    Frequently Asked Questions

    Mold Questions:

What is mold and how does it grow?

Molds are simple, microscopic organisms that are needed for breaking down dead materials. Mold produce microscopic cells called “spores” which are very tiny and lightweight, allowing them to travel through the air. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold growths (or colonies) when they find the right conditions. Mold needs water, food, and the right temperature range. Mold grows better in a dark environment, and with an organic, porous material to grow on.

    What is Black Mold?

Stachybotrys chartarum is a highly toxic mold that should be removed by a professional mold remediator to prevent cross contamination. It is usually very black in color and sometimes has a pungent odor. This mold is usually present when there is a considerable amount of water damage on building materials.

What does a mold remediation cost?

Ultimately, the price will depend on the situation. Mold jobs are charged by the sq-ft, and price depends on the severity of the mold. For the most part prepare yourself for at least anywhere from $3 to $10 sq-ft, if not more in some extreme cases. We offer free evaluations for every estimate we go on.

Should I get a Mold test done?

Mold testing is a valuable test which fully details, in a written report, any and all toxins and bacteria that are living in the air. But after the test, what next? Mold testing can get pretty expensive depending on how many rooms you want tested. If you see mold or mildew, or something you suspect may be mold or mildew, give us a call first! Our experts are very highly trained at detecting mold issues, and can offer lots of information on the type of mold and what caused it, as well as remediating the problem, and the best part of all, the evaluation is 100% FREE!

    Water Proofing Questions:

What causes water in a basement?

Heavy rains and improperly channeled roof water can oversaturate the soil surrounding your home’s foundation. Keep an eye out for condensation on cooled surfaces, ground water leaks, standing water, wall discoloration, efflorescence, wall cracks, and high humidity.

Can I solve my water problem from the outside?

Every situation and home is different. Exterior waterproofing could solve your problem, but remember in order to successfully waterproof your home from the outside you have to dig around the foundation down to the footer. If there are many obstructions in the way like porches, garages, trees, etc., those would have to be removed in order to successfully waterproof your home. Sometimes interior waterproofing is more practical.

    Why have an interior system?

First, having an indoor drainage system means you are in control of where the water is coming from and where it goes. Outside drainage pipes are usually run several feet underground and along the foundation, so it’s easier for dirt and debris to clog the system. Inside you have a sump pump that’s easily accessible, and where a backup battery pump can be hooked up. With our drainage systems we also install clean outs in several locations to ensure your system stays clog free.

How much does a water proofing system cost?

Every home is different, so the cost of each project depends on the severity of the problem. During our visit we will provide a free, no-obligation basement water proofing quote to help you invest wisely when the time comes.

    Crawlspace Questions:

    What does encapsulation mean?

Crawlspace encapsulation is a process of lining your crawl space with heavy-duty polyethylene. Usually 12 to 20 mil thickness, the polyethylene barrier covers and seals the floors and walls and guards against harmful gases, pests, and moisture.

Why is a vapor barrier needed in a crawlspace?

A vapor barrier is needed in a crawlspace to maintain healthy moisture levels. Its also protects your joists and sheathing against conditions conducive for mold growth. Vapor barriers allow you to utilize the space under your home as well.

Is a dehumidifier needed in a crawlspace or basement?

In short, “YES!” It is imperative that your crawlspace or basement have a dehumidifier. Moisture control is the secret in maintaining a dry, healthy home. Moisture can destroy a home’s foundation, beams and sheathing, etc… Control the moisture and you control the mold.
