Crawlspace encapsulation is a process of lining your crawl space with heavy-duty polyethylene. Usually 12 to 20 mil thickness, the polyethylene barrier covers and seals the floors and walls and guards against harmful gases, pests, and moisture.
A vapor barrier is needed in a crawlspace to maintain healthy moisture levels. Its also protects your joists and sheathing against conditions conducive for mold growth. Vapor barriers allow you to utilize the space under your home as well.
